What is a Diamond Certificate?
A diamond certificate can be seen as a quality approval document that verifies all the features of a diamond, especially its color, carat, clarity and cut. In addition, the laboratory certificates provided include many detailed examinations such as the exact dimensions of the diamond, its proportions, 4C features, polishing quality, etc. A diamond should not be purchased without a diamond certificate.
The institutions that issue the certificates also play an important role here. The world-renowned and non-profit laboratories HRD and GIA are the most reliable certification institutions in this regard. The institution known as HRD Antwerp is located in Antwerp/Belgium, the diamond center of the world, and from there it grades diamonds all over the world.
HRD Antwerp also has its headquarters in Turkey. GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is an organization based in America and all its certificates are accepted all over the world.
So how can laboratories examine diamonds in such detail and why are they so reliable?
It is certain that the diamond will undergo an objective evaluation in GIA and HRD laboratories. In addition to the diamond being graded by observing it with microscopes with 100x and 1000x degrees, a diamond is examined separately by 5-8 different gemologists to reach the values in the document. Clarity information is reached with appropriate lenses and color information is reached by looking at it with high-quality microscopes under the right light. The evaluation given by a jeweler or diamond store by looking with a loupe is not very accepted. Because it is not possible to definitely test the characteristics of a diamond. Laboratories reach this most accurate information by measuring diamonds in the most accurate environments.
Certified Diamond Status in Our Country
Our country is just beginning to become conscious of this issue. However, the generally accepted certificate is the one that companies print with their business name and have 4C information on the cards they create with their own evaluations. These certificates are the guarantees that companies give to consumers.
The main issue here is the difference between an international certificate and a brand certificate. There is a difference in price because HRD and GIA laboratories are located in Belgium and America and certificates are provided with high prices based on weight. Although there is no difference in quality between these two types of certificates, the main reason why internationally certified diamonds are preferred is that these documents have international validity.
Diamond grading can never be 100% accurate, and international certification organizations can increase this to 95% by providing a completely suitable environment. In brand certificates, this consistency rate is around 70%. For example, a clear value cannot be given in brand certificates regarding Cut. Because this is a value that can only be obtained from the laboratory. However, basic information does not deviate too much. The reason for directing people to get HRD or GIA certificates is to increase this consistency rate to 95%.
In the early years of diamond trade in our country, since diamonds that did not have the specified features were sold by uninformed jewelers and since other companies did not accept company-certified diamonds as very valid, international certificates were preferred. However, since the diamond will not be returned unless there is a problem such as a mistake, collision, etc., reliable company certificates can also be preferred when purchasing diamonds in order to be more affordable. However, in today's structure, company certificates are also preferred by customers and businesses no longer offer features that do not exist.
For diamonds under 0.30 carats, it is not necessary to request international certification as it will increase the cost significantly. For diamonds between 0.30 and 0.50 carats, both alternatives can be considered. However, for diamond jewelry of 0.50 and above, it is a more appropriate choice to have a diamond with an international certificate.
Is Company Preference Effective?
When purchasing a diamond, a company is effective in terms of trust. If the features of the diamond you purchase are explained to you correctly, there is no difference in terms of the product. When evaluating companies, after-sales service (ring size change, product change, product return, etc.), trust and price should be focused on. There is a wrong idea in our country to trust well-known brands. This trust is considered equivalent to paying 2-3 times more than the price of the product. However,
It should be known that it is possible to buy a better quality diamond with a more customer-oriented, better service and more affordable price on internet diamond sales sites. As a result, you can have a diamond with certain features at a more affordable price. If you prefer diamond jewelry with international certificates, you can start shopping here.
